Content Area Literacy Shift Kit

The Content Area Literacy Kit was designed to give teachers and administrators of Grades 6-12 some background information on what is expected for student achievement with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in content area literacy and areas other than language arts.

Contents of the kit include:

  • Distinction between English Language Arts, Content Area Literacy and Disciplinary Literacy
  • Presentation materials to build capacity at the school level
  • Instructional resources responsive to the demands of the CCSS

  • All Grades: The Content Area Specialists for English Language Arts and Data/Assessment have written strategies for the Common Core State Standards for Informational Text. Click on ELA Educator Resources. Click on 6-12 informational Strategies.
  • Grades 6-12: AdLit.org is a national multimedia project offering information and resources to the parents and educators of struggling adolescent readers and writers. 
  • Grade 6-12: Kelly Gallagher assigns students an "Article of the Week" every Monday morning. By the end of the school year he has them read 35 to 40 articles about what is going on in the world. These articles are listed on the site provided as well as an archived list for past years. 
  • Grade 4-12: Reading Quest: Making Sense in Social Studies is a website designed for social studies teachers who wish to more effectively engage their students with the content in their classes. Strategies can be used with other content. 
  • Grade 4-12: The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with millions of books,recordings, photographs, maps and manuscripts in its collections.
