In this 2 hour workshop, Dr. Deborah MacPhee will describe two views of reading that guide reading policy, reading programs, reading instruction, and the messages students receive about reading and themselves as readers. Dr. MacPhee will share Eye Movement Miscue Analysis (EMMA) data to demonstrate how readers gather visual information during the reading process and discuss implications of this data for reading instruction. Participants will explore their own perceptions of reading and the instructional language they use to support developing readers. Participants will leave the workshop with new ideas about reading and new strategies for supporting developing readers.
