The Mary and Jean Borg Center for Reading and Literacy is committed to enhancing literacy in our community by providing accessible, high-quality tutoring for students in elementary and middle school. As part of the Illinois State University School of Teaching and Learning, our tutoring program reflects our mission to partner with families and schools to support students’ growth as readers and writers.
Students in our tutoring program receive individualized support from both university faculty and trained future educators. Each tutoring session is guided by literacy experts and supported by pre-service teachers who work closely with students, allowing children to build strong relationships while benefiting from a team of educators invested in their success.
Our tutoring is grounded in the Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan and informed by what works best for helping children grow as readers and writers. Students attend sessions multiple times each week, creating the consistency and momentum that supports meaningful progress. During each session, students engage in focused instruction and have time to practice, apply, and build confidence and joy in their reading and writing.
Tutoring Cycles
Our tutoring program is organized into focused instructional cycles. Each cycle begins with an intake and assessment process, followed by consistent tutoring sessions designed to target specific areas of growth. This structure allows us to be responsive to each student’s needs while also monitoring progress over time. Students may participate in one or multiple cycles throughout the year, depending on their goals and availability.
