Biography

Carrie Anna Courtad, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Special Education at Illinois State University, where she has taught since 2009. She earned her Ph.D. in Special Education from Michigan State University, where her dissertation, Comparing the Teaching Self-Efficacy of General and Special Education Preservice Teachers and Factors that Influence Them, examined the beliefs and preparation of future educators. She also holds an M.Ed. in Special Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to her academic career, she spent seven years as a special education teacher in the Austin Independent School District in Texas and at Morey Charter School in Michigan, working with students across elementary, middle, and high school settings.

Research Interests & Areas

Her research focuses on assistive technology, literacy instruction, and teacher preparation, and she has been actively involved in the Illinois Tutoring Initiative, a statewide high-impact tutoring program. Dr. Courtad is a dedicated advocate for students with disabilities and the educators who serve them, working at both the state and federal levels on issues related to special education and teacher preparation. She has served on Illinois licensure and certification committees, contributed to statewide initiatives, and engaged with national organizations to advance equitable access, inclusive practices, and a well-prepared special education workforce.
